Off Skjervøy in northern Troms, herring overwinter in dense schools each year, drawing orca and humpback whale pods that feed on the baitballs through the dark Arctic months. Boats follow the pods into sheltered fjords, and snorkelers enter the water in drysuits to watch orcas work coordinated carousel-feeding maneuvers around the herring at close range. Sightings are not guaranteed on any single outing, but the concentration of animals during peak season is among the highest found anywhere.

About diving in Skjervøy — Orca Migration

The day is a boat and a search. Vessels leave the harbour in the dark, run out into the fjord system and work the water for gulls, blows and the churn where herring are being pushed up. Once a pod is found and settled, the guide slides snorkelers in a few at a time, everyone lies still on the surface and lets the animals pass, and the group is back up the ladder within minutes. A good day stacks several of those entries; a poor one is a long, cold ride with the drysuit staying dry.

Light, not depth, is the limiting factor. At 70°N the sun stays below the horizon through the darkest weeks, so the usable window is a few hours of blue twilight around the middle of the day, opening out noticeably through late January and February. Everything happens in the top few metres with no bottom in view, and you float in open black-green water watching shapes resolve out of it. Scuba would add little but bubbles, which is why the whole operation is built around snorkelling.

What surprises most people is the sound. Calls, whistles and the flat crack of a tail carry a long way through cold water, and you often hear a pod working before anything appears. Humpbacks feed on the same schools and lunge up through them from below, so trips booked for orca frequently end with humpback footage instead. The rest of the time is waiting: cold hands on a moving deck, scanning grey water, with the encounters adding up to a small share of the hours spent out.

Treat it as an expedition rather than a dive holiday. Repeated entries into water in the mid single digits reward good kit, a drysuit that fits, a hood you can see out of and gloves you can still work a camera in, and they reward patience more. Weather cancels days outright, operators work to Norwegian rules on how boats and swimmers may approach whales, and the fjords the herring choose have shifted over the years, so a productive stretch of coast one winter is no guarantee for the next.

Timing follows the herring's overwintering migration; orca and whale presence is reliable only within this window and drops off once herring disperse in late winter.

Best months: January, November, December

Norway Orca water temperature and weather by month

The sea surface runs from 3 °C (37 °F) in March to 12 °C (54 °F) in August. Rain falls through the year, about 90 mm (3.5 in) a month on average, with March the wettest. Daytime highs reach 22 °C (72 °F) in July and drop to 2 °C (36 °F) in March. The coldest water here is about 3 °C (37 °F), so pack a drysuit.

Dive types & marine life

Orca are the reliable animal from November into January, working herring alongside humpbacks, with white-beaked dolphins and seals around the same bait and white-tailed eagles overhead. October and February can still produce as the schools build and disperse. March through September is off entirely, with the herring gone and no reason to get in the water.

How to get to Skjervøy — Orca Migration

Fly into Tromsø, then continue north to Skjervøy by road or on the coastal express boat, a few hours either way. Some visitors join boats out of Tromsø instead and accept a longer run to the whales. Everything is day-boat out and back from the harbour, and beds in the village are limited in season, so boat and accommodation are normally booked together.
