Cape Maeda Point
A drop-off from 5 m to 40 m outside the cave everyone queues for

The headland dived outside the cave that made it famous. Cape Maeda is a wedge of raised coral reef walled with Ryukyu limestone, and swimming seaward from the steps takes you off a drop-off that falls from about 5 m to 30 or 40 m in short order. A detached reef called Tsubame-no-ne carries the fish life. The cape has sat inside a protected park since 1966 and closes to the water when the weather turns.
Also known as Maeda Misaki, 真栄田岬, Maeda Point.

The dive
You are diving the outside of the cape rather than the cavern in it. Above water Cape Maeda is a wedge of raised coral reef pushing into the East China Sea, walled with Ryukyu limestone cliffs — the same formation that makes Cape Manzamo further up the coast — and below the cliffs are inlets, the point itself and water that reads deep and blue straight off the rock. Get in at the steps, cross the shallow reef at about 5 m and swim out.
The bottom goes from that reef to 30 or 40 m quickly, and the drop-off is the dive. Along its face schools of Amami chromis hang in the blue and sweetlips sit back in the rock shade; deeper, on the sand at the foot of it, are jawfish and the shrimpgobies divers come here to photograph — yasha and blackray gobies among them. Spiny lobster and whitetip reef sharks turn up for anyone who looks into the cracks on the way.
Offshore the detached reef known as Tsubame-no-ne is the fish end of the site, with passing pelagics and batfish over it. Visibility is better in winter than in summer. What is fixed here is the regime around the dive rather than the route: the cape has been inside a protected park since the Ryukyu government designated it in 1966 — now part of Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park — and its official website posts each day whether entry to the water is permitted at all.

Season follows Okinawa: Divable year-round; Mar–Jun and Oct–Nov are calmest, while Jul–Sep is typhoon season and winter northerlies close the west coast.
Know before you go
- Thirteen people died in water accidents at Cape Maeda in the ten years from 2013 to 2022.
- Entry to the water is prohibited at the cape in bad weather; the closure covers the whole headland, and the official site publishes the day's call.
- The drop-off reaches 40 m within a short swim of a 5 m reef, so depth creeps up on you here; agree a maximum before you leave the shallows.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Cape Maeda Point?+
The reef top is around 5 m and the drop-off outside it falls to 30 or 40 m, which is the range the local point guide lists for the site. Most of the small stuff photographers come for sits deep on the sand at the foot of the wall.
Is Cape Maeda good for beginners?+
The shallow reef and the cave are, and shops run training dives here. The drop-off is not a beginner profile, so a newly certified diver should expect the guide to keep the dive shallow rather than take it over the edge.
