Momo Beach

An easy north-coast reef on the Napaling and Doljo road trip

Momo Beach is a gently sloping reef on Panglao's north coast, published at 5 to 25 m, mixing wall and slope with hard and soft coral and a lot of fish. It sits on the road trip that also takes in Napaling and Doljo, and it is the easy dive of that day — nothing deep, nothing technical, just a healthy stretch of north-coast reef away from the Alona boats.

The dive

The ground here is a mixture rather than one shape: a gentle slope in places, a low wall in others, with hard and soft coral across both and plenty of fish over it. Published at 5 to 25 m, it is a dive you can run entirely to your own plan — go along the deeper edge if you want the soft coral, or stay up on the slope where the light is better and the reef fish thicker.

It is the quiet member of Panglao's north-coast trio. Napaling has the sardines and Doljo has the fans and the depth, so Momo tends to be dived third, when the tanks are getting light and nobody wants another 40 m wall. That is not a criticism of the reef, which is in good condition and holds turtles and a long macro list, but it does explain why it takes so little traffic.

Because it is reached by road rather than by boat from Alona, it fits into the day differently from the south-coast sites: van out with the tanks, three dives along the north coast, back for dinner. It is also an option when the south coast is chopped up by the wind and the Alona boats are staying in.

Season follows Panglao: Nov–Jun is the main season; the south-west monsoon and typhoons disrupt Jul–Oct, though the sheltered south coast keeps working through much of it.
