Habagat Wreck

The Habagat is a dive boat lying on the sandy slope off the western tip of Alona Beach, with the hull down at around 35 to 37 m. It is Panglao's deep dive: a short run from the beach, a descent down the sand, and a hull encrusted with soft coral and sponges holding snapper, batfish, groupers and lionfish. Beginners dive the coral on the slope above it and never see the wreck at all.

Also known as Alona Wreck, Habagat.

The dive

The site is a sandy slope with a boat on it, and the dive is shaped by that: you drop in over the shallows off the western end of Alona, follow the sand down, and the hull comes out of the blue somewhere around 35 m. Because the bottom keeps going, this is a dive where the plan matters more than the wreck — bottom time at that depth is short, most operators run it on nitrox, and the ascent is spent back up the slope rather than hanging in open water.

The hull itself is small and thoroughly colonised, soft corals and sponges over the plating, and it works the way small wrecks usually do: as a piece of structure on an otherwise featureless bottom that everything else collects around. Yellow snapper and batfish hold over it, groupers and lionfish sit in the shadow of the plating, and frogfish turn up on the encrusted surfaces. There are a few small caves in the wall near the wreck where groupers and snappers hide.

It is also the reason Panglao can offer a deep dive at all without a long boat ride: the site is barely a kilometre offshore, under five minutes from the beach, and shops run it as the second tank of an ordinary morning. Divers without the depth certification are taken to the coral and fish on the slope at around 12 m instead, which is a decent dive in its own right and shares the mooring.

Season follows Panglao: Nov–Jun is the main season; the south-west monsoon and typhoons disrupt Jul–Oct, though the sheltered south coast keeps working through much of it.

Know before you go

  • The hull is at about 35–37 m and the sand keeps sloping past it, so it is easy to go deeper than planned looking for the bottom — set a maximum and a turn time before you get in.
  • No-stop time at this depth is short. Operators commonly run the dive on nitrox for that reason; on air, plan for a very brief visit to the wreck itself.

Questions divers ask

How deep is the Habagat wreck?+

Operators put the hull at about 35 to 37 m on a sandy seabed, which puts it beyond Open Water limits and into Deep Diver or Advanced territory. It is commonly dived on nitrox to get usable bottom time.

Can beginners dive the Habagat?+

Not the wreck itself. Divers without a deep certification are taken to the coral and reef fish on the slope above it, at around 12 m, which shares the same site and the same short boat ride from Alona Beach.
