Kec Wreck

Three propellers and rudders on an upturned wartime landing boat

The Kec is a Second World War landing boat about 50 m long that lies upside down on the floor of the Gulf of Trieste, a few minutes by boat from Fiesa. Its upturned hull shows off the propellers and rudders, and the space beneath it shelters a crowd of crustaceans and fish. Advanced divers can swim through the cargo hold.

Also known as Kec, Razbitina Kec.

The dive

Divers go down the buoy line and reach the upturned hull at 18 m, where the three propellers and rudders stand clear. From there they drop to the bottom at 23 m and swim along the wreck, looking under it for the life sheltering in the gap.

The wreck is full of life: many lobsters, some very large, conger eels and plenty of scorpionfish. Advanced divers can penetrate the wreck, since the cargo area is easy to swim through, though the silt inside lifts and closes the visibility behind them.

The Kec was a German landing boat of the Second World War. In 1944 it collided with another German warship in dense fog. An attempt to tow it to Trieste failed, and the crew had to cut the line; the tow line is still visible on the wreck today, where the hull now lies upside down on the bottom.

Season follows Piran & Portorož: Diving runs all year, but winter dives are on demand; summer fills the Piran Punta reef with life and brings a thermocline that can cloud the wrecks.

Know before you go

  • Heavy silt inside the hull: visibility can close up behind divers swimming through the cargo area.
