Costandis

A huge resident grouper called George escorts divers around the trawler

The Costandis is a 30 m Soviet-built trawler sunk in Limassol Bay in 2014, sitting with her top deck uppermost in 23 m. Huge shoals of amberjack, bream and morays live on her, turtles pass through, and a huge grouper nicknamed George escorts divers around the wreck. Dive centres use her for teaching specialty courses.

Also known as Constandis, Costantis, Fishing Vessel Costantis.

The dive

The trawler lies in 23 m with her top deck uppermost. A huge grouper nicknamed George often greets the group on the approach and stays close for the whole dive.

Most of the interest is on the outside of the hull. Huge shoals of amberjack circle the wreck, two-banded and saddled bream and damselfish work the structure, trumpetfish and morays hide in it, and turtles pass through.

The Costandis was built in the Soviet Union in 1989 and worked as a bottom trawler. She joined the Register of Cyprus Ships in 1997 and fished in international waters in the eastern Mediterranean for a short time. In February 2014 she was sunk off Limassol together with the passenger ship Lady Thetis, and the two hulls now make up the artificial reef just off the town.
