Fiesa Reef

Seahorses on most dives at Slovenia's most popular shore site

Fiesa Reef is the shore dive in the Fiesa bay near Piran, and the most popular site among Slovenian divers. A shallow sandy entry leads to a rocky reef and then to a field of small sunken boats, so the whole dive stays within 15 m. Seahorses are the draw, seen on most dives, and the reef is highly recommended as a night dive.

Also known as Fiesa, Greben v Fiesi.

The dive

The dive starts on sand in about 1.5 m of water. Beyond it a rocky area full of life runs down to about 8 m, and this is the reef itself. The usual route sets off from in front of the Fiesa hotel and follows the reef to the right, past the rollers and blocks, before turning back along it.

Past the reef the bottom turns to sand again, scattered with about 12 little wrecks, a car and a motorbike; the deepest wreck lies at 15 m. Seahorses turn up on most dives. At night the permanent residents come out: seahorses, octopuses, cuttlefish and squid.

Season follows Piran & Portorož: Diving runs all year, but winter dives are on demand; summer fills the Piran Punta reef with life and brings a thermocline that can cloud the wrecks.
