Piran & Portorož

Seahorses on a shore reef, and wartime wrecks minutes away by boat

Slovenia's stretch of Adriatic coast sits inside the Gulf of Trieste, where the sea is usually calm and free of current. The most popular site is the Fiesa Reef, dived from shore, where seahorses turn up on most dives. The boat adds the wall of the Piran Punta marine reserve and a run of wartime wrecks, from the upturned Kec to the Gilda, a First World War wreck whose propeller rests at 27 m.

About diving in Piran & Portorož

The diving day starts at Fiesa, where the reef begins about 100 m from shore, so the most popular site in Slovenia is a shore dive. The wrecks need the boat, and the rides are short: 6 minutes to the Kec, 8 minutes to the Maona, about 20 minutes out to the Gilda. The boat anchors just outside the Piran Punta reserve, though the reef lies close enough to land to be reached from shore as well. The gulf usually means no waves and no current.

On the Fiesa reef the rock starts at 4 m, and beyond it lies a sandy area scattered with small wrecks, a car and a motorbike. The Piran Punta reserve is a wall, and Pacug mixes a steep wall, cracked rock and sandy slopes. In summer the Piran Punta reef is full of life. Seahorses live on Fiesa, and night dives there find octopus, cuttlefish and squid. The Kec holds lobsters, conger eels and scorpionfish, while eagle rays and the odd turtle pass the reserve.

It suits newer divers and anyone learning: the Fiesa reef and Pacug work for every level, and there is no current to fight. Wreck divers get several hulls within a short ride, and the Kec's cargo hold is an easy one-way swim-through, though silt can close the visibility behind a diver. Triglav, the deepest point of the Slovenian sea at 38 m, is cold and dark with no visibility, and it is used only for deep-diver training.

Diving runs all year, though from December to February trips run on demand, and the sea is coldest in February at about 9 °C. The water warms through spring and reaches about 25 °C in August. Summer is when the Piran Punta reef is fullest of life, but the same months bring a thermocline that can sink to the deck of the Maona and spoil the visibility there.

Best months: June, July, August

Dive types & marine life

Seahorses are the signature: they are seen on most dives at Fiesa, by day and night. Octopus, cuttlefish and squid show on night dives. Eagle rays and turtles are occasional visitors to Piran Punta, and barracuda have appeared there in warm water in recent years.

Questions divers ask

How does the Fiesa shore dive run?+

The usual route starts by the Hotel Fiesa and follows the reef to the right, past cylinders and blocks, turning back at about 100 bar; a large pipe ending just under the reef marks the start.

Does weather stop the diving?+

Rain does not. Strong wind is the one serious weather factor, since it raises waves and cuts visibility, and on windy days the dive moves to another site or another time.

Is diving possible in winter?+

Yes. Diving runs all year, with winter trips on demand. Winter is also the season for the hydroplane wreck, which lies inside Portorož bay where summer visibility can be poor.
