Siargao
Blue Cathedral, a Pacific cavern swept by schooling jacks and barracuda
Siargao is a surf island on the Philippine Sea with a small dive scene run out of General Luna on its southern coast. Sheltered bay reefs such as Secret Garden and Daku Arch sit between 3 and 20 m, while Shark Point and Pilar Twin Rocks face open water. What brings divers here is Blue Cathedral, a Pacific cavern that drops to 40 m and fills with schooling jacks and barracuda.
About diving in Siargao
Dives run by speedboat from General Luna. The boats reach the bay sites in 10–20 minutes and the Pacific-facing sites in 20–35 minutes, depending on swell, and no liveaboard is based on the island. Site availability varies with weather and sea state. All sites sit inside the Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape, and diving is confined to its multiple-use zones, with the strict protection zones closed to divers.
The bay reefs are shallow, calm and coral-covered, with nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, frogfish, ribbon eels, scorpionfish, cuttlefish and octopus. Around Daku Island fusiliers, snappers, parrotfish and angelfish gather in dense aggregations. Outside, the character changes: Shark Point slopes into a wall, Pilar Twin Rocks pulls in pelagics on the current, and Blue Cathedral is an open cavern where schools of jacks, trevally and barracuda move through the interior, fish that the calmer bay sites lack.
The bay suits new divers, students and macro photographers, with minimal current and depths that stay inside Open Water limits. The Pacific sites are another matter. Currents and surge there change with swell and tide, and at Pilar Twin Rocks, beyond the reef edge and at the mouth of Blue Cathedral they can run hard during tidal changes with little warning from the surface; strong currents have caused deaths around the island. The nearest recompression chamber is in Cebu City, and an emergency means an air evacuation from Sayak Airport.

The year opens in the northeast monsoon. From November to February bay diving continues while the Pacific sites are less predictable, and the period brings typhoon risk, rougher seas, stronger currents and visibility down to 5–15 m. March to May is the best stretch for every site, with the calmest seas, the clearest bay water and the smallest swells outside. June to October brings the southwest monsoon: bay sites hold up while Pacific sites take more swell. From September the surf season roughens the east coast, while sites on the General Luna side stay diveable.

Questions divers ask
What certification is needed for Blue Cathedral?+
Advanced Open Water, plus a check dive at a bay site first. The cavern reaches 40 m and takes Pacific currents and surge when the swell is up.
When is the best time to dive Siargao?+
March to May, when seas are calmest, the bay is clearest and the Pacific swell is smallest. It is also the most reliable window for Blue Cathedral.
Can beginners dive Siargao?+
Yes. Secret Garden and Casulian Reef stay within 18 m with little current and suit newly certified divers; the Pacific sites are better left until more experience is logged.
How do divers get to Siargao?+
By air to Sayak Airport in Del Carmen, then 45–60 minutes by road to General Luna, or by ferry from Surigao City to Dapa. Every dive leaves General Luna by speedboat.
