Volcanic cave diving without an advanced card

La Cueva del Francés is a cave dive off San José in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, run in a band between 15 and 18 m and open to all certified divers. It is one of the staple guided dives on the park's western side, where the village centres provide guiding, kit hire and air fills.

The dive
San José's centres keep La Cueva del Francés on their regular roster of guided dives, running it as a short boat dive — under ten minutes out — alongside kit hire and air fills. As everywhere in the Cabo de Gata marine reserve, dives happen under authorisation from the Andalusian environmental authority, and the integral-reserve zones at the park's headlands are closed to divers outright.
The dive sits in a narrow band between 15 and 18 m, centred on the cave that names the site — the Frenchman's cave. It is rated for all divers, so a standard entry-level certification is enough, and the modest depth leaves plenty of no-decompression time to work the cave mouth and the volcanic rock around it with a torch.

Season follows Cabo de Gata-Níjar: Visitor season peaks spring through summer; surface water swings from 10-15 °C in winter to 21-30 °C in summer, with 22 °C still logged in October.
