A 40 m canyon at the end of a 5 to 20 m drop-off

A dive in the bay of Cala Joncols that follows a drop-off from 5 m to 20 m over rocky bottom and finishes in a canyon around 40 m long. Sometimes called La fall, it stays shallow enough for a long dive, with groupers, sars and moray eels on the rock and the chance of bonito schooling out in the blue.

The dive
The dive runs along a drop-off inside the bay of Cala Joncols, from 5 m at the top to 20 m at the foot, with rocky bottom the whole way. That shallow band is what makes the site work as a long, unhurried dive: gas lasts, no-decompression time is generous, and the team can search the rock rather than covering ground against a clock or a depth limit.
Along the way the rock holds grouper, sar and denti, with moray eels wedged in the cracks, red coral on the shaded faces and small lobsters tucked under the overhangs. Out in the blue there is a chance of schooling bonito passing the drop-off, so it is worth turning away from the wall now and then. The dive culminates in a canyon some 40 metres long, and the site is sometimes referred to as La fall.

Season follows Cap de Creus: Jun–Sep is warmest and calmest; the Tramuntana blows hardest in winter and spring and regularly cancels boats for days at a time.
