Sec du Congrès, also called Sec de la Fontaine, is a submerged rock whose top is already at about 22 m and which drops from there to around 40. Scubago rates it advanced and expert only, and the profile is why: there is no shallow ground above the rock to soften the dive. The interest, once you are down, is small and close rather than big.

The dive

This is a sec: the rock never reaches the surface, and its top is already at about 22 m, so the dive starts deep and only goes deeper. From the top the ground falls away to around 40 m. Scubago rates the site for advanced and expert levels, and the profile is the reason — with the summit at 22 m there is no shallow rock to run out the end of the dive on.

Work the rock rather than the depth. It was once rich in conger eels; what the site holds today is red scorpionfish, corb and crustaceans, on ground Scubago describes as an unspoilt natural environment. Everything on that list is small, so the rock repays a slow close pass instead of a lap. Leave it with enough gas for a mid-water safety stop, because there is nothing shallow to hang on.

  • The top of the rock is at 22 m and its base at 40, so there is no shallow ground on this site — plan a mid-water safety stop rather than expecting rock to finish the dive on.
