The Daymaniyats are nine low limestone islands 18 km off the coast near Muscat, protected as Oman's first marine nature reserve. The reef around them is in better condition than most of the Arabian Sea, with hard-coral gardens in the shallows and rock arches and swim-throughs deeper down. Whale sharks arrive in late summer to feed on the plankton bloom, green turtles nest on the beaches through the closed season, and the boat ride is only 45 minutes.

About diving in Daymaniyat Islands

Diving here is day-boat work off the Muscat coast. Centres leave the marinas early, run two dives with the surface interval spent in the lee of an island, and are back alongside by early afternoon; longer trips add a third tank or a night dive. Because the islands are a protected reserve, operators arrange the entry permits and tie to moorings rather than dropping anchor on coral. What cancels a day is wind and swell rather than the calendar, and the June-to-July lull owes as much to heat and rough water as to what the reef is doing.

The islands sit in three loose groups and each has a sheltered face and an exposed one, which is how the day's sites get picked. Southern sides are gentle: coral shelves in easy depths, sand patches between them, and enough shallow ground to spend most of a dive above the thermocline. The outer and northern faces take more water and are built of bigger boulders and short walls, cut through with passages wide enough to swim rather than squeeze. Current is generally mild, so the difference is swell and light more than drift.

The appeal is less spectacle than the effect of protection. Fishing is restricted inside the reserve and it shows in behaviour: turtles that carry on grazing while you hang above them, snapper stacked under the rock instead of scattering, eagle rays crossing open sand without hurrying. Add warm water, forgiving depths and a crossing measured in minutes, and it becomes an easy few days to fold into a wider trip through Oman — a place to build dives on rather than survive them.

Sep–May is the main season; whale sharks are most reliable Aug–Nov, and the islands close to landing May–Oct for turtle nesting.

Best months: March, April, September, October, November

Daymaniyat Islands water temperature and weather by month

The sea surface runs from 24 °C (75 °F) in February to 32 °C (90 °F) in June. Most rain falls from August, peaking at about 150 mm (5.9 in) in August; May and June are the driest. Daytime highs reach 37 °C (99 °F) in June and drop to 26 °C (79 °F) in January. The coldest water here is about 22 °C (72 °F), so pack a 5 mm suit.

Dive types & marine life

Turtles show on almost every dive and often keep grazing rather than bolting. Schooling snapper and trevally, eagle rays, mobulas and the occasional reef shark are there through the season, while the slow shallow dives are where nudibranchs and the small stuff pay off. Whale sharks come in with the late-summer plankton and are most likely from August into November.

How to get to Daymaniyat Islands

Fly into Muscat and base in the city or along the coast; boats leave from the marinas there for a crossing of well under an hour. It is day-boat diving only — there is nowhere to stay on the islands, and landing on them is closed May–Oct while turtles nest, though the diving carries on right through that closure.
