Ari Atoll, with little Rasdhoo off its north-east coast, is chosen for regular encounters with big marine life and is a fixture on liveaboard routes. Current-swept thilas such as Fish Head and Maaya Thila carry grey reef sharks and dense fish life, Maamigili Beyru on the southern edge is a long drift where whale sharks are present all year, Hammerhead Point at Rasdhoo means scalloped hammerheads in blue water, and manta cleaning stations sit around the atoll.
About diving in Ari & Rasdhoo Atolls
Ari features on the routes of many Maldivian liveaboards, which work its thilas, giris and kandus, and boats crossing between Ari and South Male often stop at Rasdhoo for Hammerhead Point. Dive centres on the inhabited islands of Rasdhoo and Dhigurah run day trips; on Dhigurah fun dives are daily, often a two-tank morning trip and an afternoon dive. Current shapes each dive: guides may run a descent and ascent line on the thilas, and a blue-water safety stop can bring a group up some way from the boat.
Ari has few long stretches of barrier reef; instead thilas, submerged pinnacles inside and outside the lagoons, gather the life, some topped with table coral at 5 m, with kandus (channels) cutting between them. Strong currents leave the coral less lush than elsewhere in Asia, but the fish make up for it: packs of grey reef sharks and spotted eagle rays on the pinnacles, bigeye trevally hunting over the reefs at night, Napoleon wrasse and turtles on the slopes, nudibranchs and frogfish in the shallows. South Ari's long reef shelf is a whale shark aggregation area, and the horseshoe reef of Rasdhoo Madivaru has a wall below 20 m with overhangs, caverns and crevices.
Ari suits divers who come for regular encounters with big marine life and are at ease in moving water. The hammerhead dive starts at dawn with a descent past 30 m to hang in open blue, and the current on Maaya Thila is very changeable, so the crew's experience and judgement count. A diver who wants gentle coral gardens with no current will find Ari's best sites the opposite of that, while one who wants sharks, mantas and whale sharks on the same trip will find all three present year-round.

Diving runs all year. December opens the calm stretch, and liveaboard departures are firmest from December to May, when the seas settle most; outside those months the seas are unpredictable. The northern-rim manta station is busiest from December to March. Mantas stay common through the rest of the year and reach their peak from August to November. Whale sharks and hammerheads do not follow the calendar.
Best months: January, February, March, April, May, December
Ari & Rasdhoo Atolls water temperature and weather by month
The sea surface stays between 28 and 30 °C (82–86 °F) all year. Most rain falls from July to December, peaking at about 220 mm (8.7 in) in November; it stays largely dry from January to April. Daytime highs sit around 29 °C (84 °F) all year. The coldest water here is about 26 °C (79 °F), so pack a 3 mm full suit.
Dive types & marine life
Whale sharks are resident year-round in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, and scalloped hammerheads are resident at Hammerhead Point in every month, best found at first light. Mantas are common all year, peaking from August to November, with February and March the best months at Panettone Thila. Grey reef sharks, eagle rays and Napoleon wrasse are regulars on the thilas.

Questions divers ask
Where are the manta cleaning stations in Ari Atoll?+
Donkalo Thila in west Ari, Rangali Madivaru in the south-west and Kudarah Thila in the south-east are cleaning stations, and Ukulhas Thila on the northern rim has one on a pinnacle facing the open ocean.
Is South Ari Atoll a marine protected area?+
Yes. The Maldives government declared the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area in 2009; it runs along the reef from Rangali in the west to Dhigurah in the north and is one kilometre wide.
Can Ari Atoll be dived without a liveaboard?+
Yes, from dive centres on Rasdhoo and on Dhigurah in South Ari. Ari is over 40 km long and its best sites lie far apart, though, so a liveaboard is the only practical way to dive more than a few of them.
What experience does diving Ari Atoll need?+
Intermediate to advanced. Current can be strong across the thilas and channels, and good buoyancy control keeps fins clear of delicate growth while the water moves. In little or no current Maaya Thila can suit all levels.
