Île de Groix & Lorient

A German U-boat at 38 m and wrecks from both world wars around one island

Groix lies a few kilometres off Lorient in southern Brittany, and the water around it holds wrecks left by both world wars as well as rock sites and shoals. The U 171, a German submarine sunk by a mine off Pen Men, rests at 38 m and is the island's flagship wreck; the Cyrano tug (18 m) and the Sperrbrecher (20–23 m) lie shallower. Divers go out with the island's own club at Port-Lay or with a centre at Larmor-Plage, on the mainland facing the island.

About diving in Île de Groix & Lorient

On the island, the only club works from Port-Lay, along the coastal path from the ferry at Port-Tudy, and its RIBs head out along the Groix coast. Sites run from the coast to the shoals and the wrecks left by the two world wars, and they are usually chosen the day before or on the day itself, depending on the weather. From the mainland, a centre at Larmor-Plage dives the island's wrecks and rock sites, and the other mainland clubs also run trips out to Groix.

The seabed mixes rock and wreckage, and the shoals are thick with life. Among the wrecks are trawlers torpedoed in the Second World War. The best known is the U 171, a German submarine that struck a mine off Pen Men on its way back to the submarine base at Keroman. The Cyrano lies not far from Port-Lay and the Sperrbrecher off Port-Tudy. Over the rock, the fish include pollack, pouting, ballan wrasse, John Dory and bass.

Groix suits divers from Niveau 1 upwards, and the island club trains to Niveau 1 and Niveau 2 as well as guiding certified divers. Every exploration with the club needs a medical certificate and a current FFESSM licence, and the club is an association that asks for annual membership. Divers who want warm water should look elsewhere: the sea is at about 9 °C in February and peaks near 19 °C in July and August.
