Golden Passage runs through the north of Komodo National Park, where current conditions are generally strong and the site is dived as a moving reef rather than a fixed one. It is a sloping site with a maximum depth of 25 m, and the catalogue is clear that it suits experienced divers only.

The dive
The passage is a sloping site, not a wall, with 25 m under you at the deepest. The current is generally strong, so the dive is planned around it: in fast, down onto the slope, then a long move along the reef while the flow does the work. Guides pick the window and the direction from the tide table, and the boat follows bubbles rather than sitting on a mooring.
Because the whole dive is spent moving, the useful skills are buoyancy and position rather than distance covered. Staying low against the slope keeps you out of the worst of the flow, and the ascent is made off the reef with an SMB deployed for the pickup. This is not a site to learn drift technique on: the catalogue rates it for experienced divers, and the north of Komodo can turn a briefed plan around on the water.
