Taiko no Mori

Taiko no Mori, the ancient forest, is a shore dive in Lake Shikotsu where old driftwood lies on the lake bed. The wood dates from the time the lake formed, and the whole dive stays within 12 m of water.

The dive
The dive starts from the beach and heads for the lake bed, where trunks and branches that have lain there since the lake formed rest on the bottom. The route stays shallower than 12 m, which keeps the whole dive within reach of divers new to the lake.

Season follows Lake Shikotsu: Diving runs all year; late June to August is the top season, and January and February bring dives under the ice.
