Meemu Atoll

Meemu is dived almost entirely from liveaboards cruising down from Male, and the boats that stop here are often diving sites that see few visitors in a year. There is no confirmed dive centre on the atoll. Of the two resort islands, Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa is operating and is described as having a dive school, but it publishes no dive-centre page, and Medhufushi Island Resort's own websites currently resolve to parked domains, so its status is unconfirmed. Local islands such as Muli and Kolhufushi are reached by speedboat in two to two and a half hours from Male, but no day-boat dive operation was found on them. The surface can be choppy on the outer rim.

The atoll follows the usual Maldivian shape: a ring reef broken by channels, called kandus, with pinnacles and reef ridges inside. The eastern and western rims carry the deep channels, where the current sweeps in plankton-rich water that feeds soft coral and holds pelagics. Mulaku Kandu in the north-east is peppered with soft-coral pinnacles, with a strong incoming current that keeps it for experienced divers and rays and sharks on the descent to 30 m. Inside, the diving is gentler: Medhufushi Thila drops from 4 m to a wall at 35 m with almost no current, Picasso has soft, leather and fan corals at 15–25 m, and Mantas and More is a manta cleaning station on a coral slope.

This suits divers on a southern liveaboard route who already have drift experience and want channel diving without other boats around. Water runs 27–30°C with visibility of 20–30 m, and depths of 5–35 m cover the ordinary diving. Anyone who wants a land base with a known dive centre, day boats and easy transfers should look at the central atolls around Male and Ari instead; Meemu has no confirmed shore-based operator, and the itinerary is set by the boat rather than the diver.
