One dive, three cenotes: the route runs from Tajma Ha through Cenote Sugar Bowl and on to Cenote Esmeralda, and each of the three reads differently underwater. It sits 26 km south of Playa del Carmen and is known for haloclines that mirror the ceiling and for light coming through holes in the roof in hard beams.

The dive

The entrance is a small pool in the jungle that gives no hint of the passage behind it. From there the guided route threads decorated passage where stalactites hang from the ceiling, columns run floor to ceiling and curtain formations drape the walls, with fossils visible in the rock along the way.

The circuit passes through Cenote Sugar Bowl, where the roof opens and the light drops in, and carries on to Cenote Esmeralda. Diving three connected cenotes on one profile is what people come here for: the sizes, the light and the decoration are different in each, so the dive keeps changing rather than settling into one look.

Haloclines sit in the deeper sections and produce mirror-like effects as divers cross from fresh water into the salt layer beneath. In the summer months the light through the holes in the ceiling comes down in beams sharp enough to swim through, which is when operators try to book the middle of the day.
