Cenote Nicte Ha

Shallow neighbour of Dos Ojos on the same ejido road

Area photo: diego_cue · CC BY-SA 3.0

A shallow cenote in the Ejido Jacinto Pat, ten minutes north of Tulum on the same access road as Cenote Dos Ojos and Cenote The Pit. The profile averages 4 to 5 m, so the dive is long and unhurried, and the site's own description asks for very good buoyancy to enjoy it.

The dive

The turn-off is the Jacinto Pat ejido road ten minutes north of Tulum, the same track that serves Cenote Dos Ojos and Cenote The Pit. Entry is from the shore into still water with no current, and the guide sets the route from the surface before the group drops into a cavern that never gets deep.

Average depth is 4 to 5 m, which is shallow enough that the dive runs long on a single tank and shallow enough that everything you do with your fins is felt by the bottom. Buoyancy is the whole skill here rather than depth or navigation, and a group that stays off the floor gets clear water for the length of the dive.

Know before you go

  • At 4 to 5 m the floor is always close; poor trim stirs the bottom and the visibility goes with it for everyone following.
