Twilight Zone
Reef sharks circling outcrops that peak at 23 m and fall away below
Area photo: Patrick Hawks · CC BY 2.0
A series of rocky outcrops where the shallower peaks stand at 23 m and the reef starts dropping sharply away from 24 m. Those shallower tops are what buy back bottom time on a site that is otherwise all deep. Caribbean reef sharks circle the structure, tiger or yellowfin groupers hold on it, and nurse sharks lie up in the sand beneath the overhangs.

The dive
The structure is a series of rocky outcrops rather than a single summit, and the shallowest peaks stand at 23 m. That detail matters here, because those tops are what give the dive any usable bottom time at all. From 24 m the reef plummets sharply into a run of drop-offs, so the dive is worked along the peaks and the upper edge of the fall rather than down the face of it.
Caribbean reef sharks circle the outcrops, and tiger or yellowfin groupers hold station on the rock. The sandy areas beneath the overhangs are where the more docile nurse sharks lie up. Smaller life is worth slowing for between the big animals, sea slugs among it. Plan the turn early: there is no shallow reef above the peaks to finish on, so the ascent happens in open water.

Know before you go
- Nothing on the site is shallower than 23 m, so a slow start eats the dive quickly; watch gas and no-decompression time from the moment you leave the line.

Questions divers ask
How deep is Twilight Zone?+
The shallower peaks of the outcrops are at 23 m and the reef begins plummeting away from 24 m. There is nothing shallower to work, so the whole dive is spent deep and the profile has to be planned around that.
