Sodwana Bay lies inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, with a string of coral reefs reached from the beach. Two Mile Reef is the most popular, Five Mile adds branching and table corals, Seven Mile has overhangs and drop-offs, and Quarter Mile fills with gestating ragged-tooth sharks in summer. The reefs sit within a marine protected area that asks every diver for a permit.
About diving in Sodwana Bay
Several dive operators are based in Sodwana, with equipment and gas fills on hand, and every dive starts at the beach. The reefs take their names from their distance from Jesser Point, the launch site, so Quarter Mile lies close in and Nine Mile is the farthest north of those dived regularly. A permit is needed to scuba dive anywhere in the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area.
Two Mile Reef holds several named sites. Coral Gardens is a flat spread of hard and soft corals that suits drifting when the current picks up, and Antons draws giant morays, turtles and feeding manta rays, with bigeye kingfish in bait balls near the surface. On Five Mile, Ribbon pairs drop-offs and lush coral with blacktip reef sharks, pelagic schools and large morays. Quarter Mile's shallow reef holds turtles, game fish, firefish, rays, pipefish and scorpionfish.
Sodwana suits a mixed group, from shallow Quarter Mile to Five Mile, which reaches 35 m. Quarter Mile is so shallow that swell strongly affects conditions there, so diving it depends on the sea. Technical divers have one further option: coelacanth dives in the canyon need a special permit and trimix certification and competence for depths of over 100 m.

Conditions are generally good through the whole year, so the calendar is set by what a diver wants to see. Pregnant ragged-tooth sharks gestate on Quarter Mile Reef from December to March, and the reef is dived most in January and February, when they congregate. From April to September the water is at its clearest, with visibility reaching 30 m. Humpback whales migrate through the bay from winter into spring.
