Duppy Waters is a gently sloping coral garden off Utila, dived by day for the rays working its sandy patches and by night for the bioluminescence that gave the site its name. Depths run from 6 to 24 metres and the current is negligible, which makes it one of the island's easier sites for beginners and for photographers working close in to the reef.

The dive
The dive is an unhurried tour of a gently sloping coral garden, so the profile is yours to set: the reef runs from about 6 metres at the crest down to 24 metres where it meets the sand. Current is negligible, which means you can hold position over a single sandy patch and wait rather than cover ground. Eagle rays and stingrays glide across those patches, while blue tangs and creole wrasse swarm the reef crest above you.
Octopus are the reliable find here. They hunt crustaceans in the cracks and crevices of the reef, most actively on morning and late-afternoon dives, so it pays to work the broken edges of the coral slowly instead of swimming a long circuit. The same absence of current and the shallow profile make Duppy Waters a straightforward night dive, and after dark the reef takes on the bioluminescent glow the site is named for.
Background
'Duppy' means ghost in the local island dialect, and the name comes from the way the water sparkles at night: an eerie bioluminescent glow that islanders once attributed to spirits. By day the site is simply a gently sloping coral garden, so it is the after-dark character of the place that the name preserves.
