Vaavu Atoll

Diving here is boat-based, and most of it happens from liveaboards roaming the central atolls; Vaavu is the atoll they reach for Fotteyo and the channels along its eastern edge. Land-based options are few and small. Fulidhoo Dive & Water Sports works from Fulidhoo, an inhabited island an hour from Male by speedboat, with Farukolhu Kandu and Kunaavashi Kandu a short run away. Vaali Beach Dive Lodge on Felidhoo, the atoll capital, has eight rooms and sells a dive-and-stay package, and Alimatha Aquatic Resort has run its own dive centre on Alimathaa since 1975. Which sites get dived on a given day depends on the tide, since the channels are dived on incoming water.

The atoll is a ring of reef broken by kandus, and the channels are dived the same way: drop in at the outer mouth on incoming water, hang on the reef edge while grey reef and whitetip sharks hold in the flow, then let the current carry the group inward. Overhangs cut the walls from 10 m past 30 m on Kunaavashi's south side, and Fulidhoo's back reef runs 4 km with table corals above wide overhangs at 15 to 30 m. Coral Garden, a giri rising to 1 m at low tide, suits calmer dives. Felidhoo Corner is a manta cleaning station among boulders. The Alimatha jetty night dive draws nurse sharks over three metres long; the resort fed them for years, and reports that this stopped are unconfirmed.

Vaavu also has real cave terrain, and in May 2026 it saw the deadliest diving accident in Maldivian history: five Italians, four University of Genoa researchers and their liveaboard's captain, died in the Dhekunu Kandu cave near Thinadhoo after losing their way at around 60 m, and a Maldivian coast guard diver died of decompression sickness during the recovery. The government suspended the vessel's licence and said it was drafting a law to require permits for dives beyond the 30 m recreational limit or into caves and wrecks; as of mid-2026 it was announced, not enacted. The overhang dives above are unaffected; anyone planning deep or penetration dives should confirm the rules in force.

This is an atoll for divers who already handle strong current and want channels rather than resort reefs. Newer divers can be kept to Farukolhu Kandu, Coral Garden and the slack-water end of Miyaru Kandu, but a week here is thin for them. Divers who want a wider mix of thilas, sheltered pinnacles and resort infrastructure will do better in the central atolls of North and South Male and Ari, and anyone whose priority is mantas in numbers should look to Baa Atoll and Hanifaru Bay in the south-west monsoon instead.
