O'Keefe's Passage

A landing craft, a torpedo and a circus boat in one channel

Area photo: Jeff Hemminger · CC BY-SA 3.0

The sandy-bottomed ship channel that runs almost two miles from the ocean in to the docks at Colonia, with several separate stretches worth diving along it. A wartime landing craft, a torpedo in the sand and a former circus boat are scattered through it, at depths from 9 m to 37 m.

The dive

This is the shipping channel rather than a reef: it extends almost 3.2 km (2 miles) from the ocean to the docks of Colonia, sandy-bottomed the whole way, with several separate areas along it worth putting a dive on. Depths across those stretches run from 9 m to 37 m and the current is modest, 0 to 5 km/h, so divers drift along the southern side, through the schools of fish that gather near the channel entrance.

The wreckage is the draw. An unnamed WWII LCU sits upright in the channel between Markers 8 and 10, its bow at 12 m and its stern at 18 m, with a torpedo resting in the sand at 21 m just behind it. Elsewhere in the channel lies the Laura Marie, an 80 ft (25 m) former circus boat put down deliberately in 1992 and used as a night dive when conditions outside turn rough. Schools of black snapper and humphead parrotfish work the sand, and lobsters sit in niches and small caves along the channel.

Season follows Yap: Mantas are present year-round, but the Dec-Mar dry season brings calmer seas and clearer water for photographing the cleaning stations.
