Cascade Room entrance leads to crystal rooms with names like Fangorn Forest
An inland cave system in the pine forest of South Abaco, entered through a sinkhole leading down to the Cascade Room at about 24 metres. From there, sidemount and stage divers follow more than 18 kilometres of combined passage (shared with neighbouring Ralph's Cave) through crystal-decorated rooms including Fangorn Forest and the Badlands. Diving is guide-only, one or two divers at a time, through Bahamas Underground.

The dive
Entry is down a sinkhole in the pine forest to the Cascade Room, an entrance chamber roughly 24 metres below the surface guarded by a cluster of stalagmite formations divers here call the Gnomes. From there the cave opens into kilometre after kilometre of surveyed passage, most of it accessible only in sidemount configuration; backmount diving is no longer supported by the local operator because the passages are too tight for double-cylinder rigs to pass safely.
The named sections are the draw: Fangorn Forest, reached on a double-stage dive, is a chamber so dense with soda-straw stalactites, helictites and columns up to nine metres tall that divers describe it as swimming through a crystal chandelier. The Badlands, a narrower sidemount-only passage, holds some of the most delicate formations in the system despite its name. Beyond both lies the Airplane Hangar, a chamber large enough that Bahamas Underground compares it to a baseball stadium infield.
A tight restriction nicknamed Rich's Rub, or the Velcro Restriction, gatekeeps the cave's deeper sections, and a halocline at roughly 15 to 17 metres marks where the fresh water lens gives way to salt water below. Water temperature holds a constant 24°C year-round, and dives typically require staged decompression on oxygen; divers bring their own sidemount rigs, since rental gear on Abaco is limited and cave-specific.
Background
Bahamas Underground's Brian Kakuk has explored and surveyed Dan's Cave since the mid-1990s, laying line into what has become one of the most highly decorated cave systems documented anywhere; by 2010 National Geographic reported nearly seven miles explored, and exploration has continued since, most recently pushing shallow attic passages such as the Ninja Passage found in 2014. Dan's Cave and neighbouring Ralph's Cave are treated as a single connected system for passage-length statistics, together exceeding 18 kilometres of surveyed line.

Season follows South Abaco Blue Holes: Cave water holds a constant 24°C year-round; the rating tracks Atlantic hurricane exposure, not temperature — Great Abaco took a direct Category 5 hit from Hurricane Dorian in September 2019.
Know before you go
- No direct ascent exists from most of the passage; only full-cave-certified divers may enter, and unguided diving is not permitted under the local operators' agreement.
- Formations are extremely fragile — a single misplaced fin kick can shatter crystal growths tens of thousands of years old, and poor buoyancy or trim is not tolerated in the tighter sections.
- A halocline at 15 to 17 metres mixes fresh and salt water and can cloud visibility mid-dive for divers behind the lead light.
- Venomous remipede crustaceans inhabit the deeper passages; local cave divers describe their bite as extremely painful.

Do I need cave certification to dive Dan's Cave?+
Yes. Full-cave certification through NACD or IANTD is required, and diving is guide-only through Bahamas Underground; there is no cavern-only or open-water option here.
How deep does Dan's Cave go?+
The Cascade Room entrance sits at about 24 metres, and different sections of the surveyed system range roughly 23 to 45 metres, with a halocline at 15 to 17 metres.
Can I dive Dan's Cave independently if I'm cave certified?+
No. Local Abaco operators have agreed that all cave diving here runs through a guide, with no more than one or two divers per trip.
