Triton Caverns

A lit tunnel with windows out to the open water

Area photo: dronepicr · CC BY 2.0

Two caverns found by the dive centre's own team while looking for new sites, and shallow enough that the operator opens them to entry-level divers. One is a lit tunnel with windows to the outside; the other has an entrance at 6 metres and penetrates to 15. The dive centre keeps the location to itself, so no position is published.

The dive

There are two distinct caverns here, both found by the dive centre's team while they were out searching for new sites. The first is a passage with ample lighting: it has windows to the outside cut into it, so colour holds inside rather than draining away, and the tunnel reads as a lit corridor rather than a dark overhead.

The second cavern has an entrance at 6 metres and penetrates to 15. From there you follow the coastline round, along walls and through boulder fields, and into a large cavern at the end of the dive. The whole area of interest sits between 5 and 18 metres with 30 metres as the maximum, which is why the operator opens the site to Open Water divers - the interest is in the topography and the light, not in depth.

Season follows Alonissos & the Peristera Wreck: The underwater museum and most operators run May–Oct only; meltemi winds can close the exposed Peristera site in midsummer.

Know before you go

  • The second cavern penetrates to 15 m from a 6 m entrance - a real overhead, so carry a light, keep the guide's order and stay inside your training.

Questions divers ask

Where exactly are the Triton Caverns?+

The dive centre whose team found and named the caverns keeps the location to itself, so no position is published and the marker here is the area rather than a fix. The site is dived with the operator, and the caverns sit between 5 and 18 metres.
