Boss Reef
Six miles of sloping coral from the harbour to Point Saline
Photo: Charlotte Kirchner · CC BY 4.0
Boss Reef begins just outside St George's harbour and continues for six miles southwest towards Point Saline, so any dive here is one section of a much longer reef, worked between about 6 and 25 metres. Finger and pillar corals, sea rods, sea whips and forests of soft coral cover a gently sloping bottom broken by canyons, crevices and sand patches.

The dive
The reef begins just outside St George's harbour and carries on for six miles to the southwest, towards Point Saline, so boats choose a stretch and the dive runs along the slope rather than around a fixed feature. The gently sloping topography is carpeted in patches of finger and pillar coral, branching sea rods, sea whips and forests of soft brown coral trees, with the profile working between about 6 and 25 metres.
Large shoals of blue Creole wrasse flit through the coral, and the rest of the interest is in the gaps: Caribbean lobsters peer out of canyons and crevices, while stingrays, conch and octopus sit in the sand patches that dot the reef. Depth here is a choice rather than a constraint, since the slope is gentle enough to spend most of the dive in the shallower half and finish over the coral heads.
The Tyrrel Bay wreck lies upright off the edge of the reef, inside the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, and is opened up well enough for divers to tour it from the captain's quarters to the engine room, galley and bridge — which is why the two are commonly run back to back.

Where is Boss Reef?+
It begins just outside St George's harbour and extends six miles southwest towards Point Saline. There is no single point to dive — boats work a section of the reef, and the Tyrrel Bay wreck lies off its edge.
