Northern Exposure

Northern Exposure is the northernmost site on Boss Reef, where fingers of coral run out from a reef top at 8 m and carry on down below 25 m. The spread of depth is the appeal: you can work the shallow top for a long, slow dive or follow one of the coral fingers out down the slope and turn back along it.

The dive
Drop in over the reef top, which comes up to 8 m, and get your bearings on the edge before heading out: the structure here is a set of coral fingers running away from the main reef, and they carry on down below 25 m. Pick one, follow it out to the depth you have planned, and use the same finger as your line back up to the top.
Because the north end is where the reef breaks up into separate fingers, there is more edge than reef, and the dive becomes a matter of choosing which gully to look down. Depth takes care of the profile: the deepest part of the dive comes first at the outer ends of the fingers, then they rise as you work back toward the top at 8 m, where the shallow reef gives a long, unhurried finish.

Season follows Grenada: December–May is driest with the calmest seas; June–November is rainier, though Grenada sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt with comparatively lower risk.
Know before you go
- The coral fingers run out below 25 m and it is easy to follow one deeper than planned; set a turn depth before you leave the 8 m reef top.
