Addu is the southernmost atoll in the Maldives and an almost closed ring of reef, broken by only four channels. The diving is land-based and short-range: the British Loyalty, a 1928 oil tanker torpedoed at her anchorage in 1944 and scuttled in 1946, lies on her side between 16 and 33 m about ten minutes from the jetty; the Maa Kandu channel holds a manta cleaning station at 19-25 m that the atoll's centres dive in every month of the year; and the outer wall falls from a 5-8 m reef top past 30 m into open ocean.
About diving in Addu Atoll
Diving Addu is land-based and short-range. The centres sit on the causeway islands - Aquaventure on Maradhoo, Diverland at Equator Village on Gan - and on Herathera, where Diverland and Werner Lau run the school at Canareef. The dhoni leaves from a jetty rather than a mother ship, and Aquaventure runs a two-tank morning and a single tank in the afternoon. The British Loyalty, which the centres call the biggest wreck in the Maldives, is ten to twenty minutes out, the Maa Kandu manta point about thirty, and the far end of the range is the outer reef at the north-west corner, three quarters of an hour away. Because the ring of reef is almost closed, the atoll stays diveable in most weather.
Only four channels break the rim - Kuda Kandu and Maa Kandu in the north, Gan in the south and the broad Villingili channel in the south-east - and they are what the diving is built on. Inside the cuts, sandy slopes run from 5 to 25 m with coral blocks standing on them; at the corners the reef flattens out near 22 m under hard coral fields. Outside, the wall drops from a 5-8 m reef top past 30 m, and off Canareef to 60. The 2016 bleaching damaged the outer reefs between 3 and 12 m; the 1998 event, which hit the rest of the country, is recorded as having spared this atoll.
Addu suits divers who want a fixed base, short boat rides and a wreck, and who would rather dive a manta cleaning station in any month than gamble on a season. Most sites are rated for all levels, so it also works as a place to build hours after a course. It is not the atoll for a shark encounter on every dive - Fuvahmulah, the next island north, has the tiger aggregation - and divers set on covering several atolls in a week are better served by a central-atoll liveaboard.

2011–2025 averages. Sea surface: NOAA Coral Reef Watch, measured at the surface, so deeper water can run colder. Daytime high and rain: NASA POWER.
Addu's resident dive centre rates January to April driest and busiest and July to September best for visibility; May-June and October-December are wetter. Full and new moon run the strongest currents.
Best months: January, February, March, April, July, August, September
Addu Atoll water temperature and weather by month
The sea surface stays between 29 and 30 °C (84–86 °F) all year. Most rain falls from May, peaking at about 200 mm (7.9 in) in May; February and March are the driest. Daytime highs sit around 29 °C (84 °F) all year. The coldest water here is about 27 °C (81 °F), so pack a 3 mm, or even a 2 mm, suit.
Dive types & marine life
Reef mantas are the constant: the atoll's centres dive the Maa Kandu cleaning station in every month of the year, best on an incoming tide. Grey reef and whitetip sharks work the channel mouths, with napoleon wrasse, green turtles, eagle rays, barracuda and tuna over the coral. The tigers and silvertips at Shark Point come to bait put in by a local diver.

How to get to Addu Atoll
Gan International Airport is on the atoll itself, about an hour by domestic flight from Male, with SriLankan flying in from Colombo. The 16 km Addu Link Road causeway then joins Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo, so the centres on Maradhoo and at Equator Village on Gan are a road transfer; Canareef, on Herathera across the lagoon, is reached by boat.
