Netrani Island is an uninhabited island off Murudeshwar on the Karnataka coast, dived from day boats that take about 70 to 90 minutes to reach it. Coral reefs, rocky pinnacles and walls ring the island, with most dives between 8 and 30 m. Shelter Cove, a protected marine area with turtles and schooling reef fish, and Grand Central Station, named for its gathering of pelagic fish, are the sites to ask for first.
About diving in Netrani Island & Murudeshwar
All diving is from boats. Day boats leave Murudeshwar for Netrani Island, a crossing of about an hour and a half that varies with the weather, and dive the reefs around an island nobody may step onto: it is uninhabited and a restricted naval area where public landing is prohibited. The boat anchors close to the island for each dive. The centres at Murudeshwar run courses, introductory dives and guided trips.
The island is ringed by coral reefs and rocky pinnacles, with a few shipwrecks among them. Shallow sites such as Dini's Delight go no deeper than 8 m, while Cul-de-Sac runs between sheer walls on either side. Butterflyfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, lionfish, sea cucumbers and shrimps are common sightings, and schools of fish, barracudas and moray eels move over the coral. Navy target practice has left spent shells that divers may come across on the bottom.
In peak season the island is a common place to learn to dive. Cul-de-Sac is nothing too challenging, and the Grotto, one of the less visited sites, gives beginners a quiet dive away from the crowds. The Abyss is the site for divers who want a deeper dive and comes with the experience it demands. Divers whose priority is large animals should treat the rare whale shark as a bonus rather than a reason to book, and anyone looking at the monsoon months should plan for another time of year.

The season opens in October, the last month of rough water from the south-west monsoon. November to May brings better visibility and calmer seas, and December to February are the optimum months for Netrani. The boats keep running through March, April and May, the end of the season. From June the monsoon turns the sea rough, and conditions stay poor until October. The water holds between 27 and 30 °C through the diving months.
