Vertical seamount wall dived at 25–30 m in swirling current

Brave Hills Napo is the sheer face of a seamount off Pulau Para, one of the southern islands of the Sangihe chain. Divers are taken along the vertical wall at twenty-five to thirty metres, in water that swirls rather than runs one way and is described as very strong. Barracuda, jacks, trevally and napoleon wrasse hold off the rock in clear blue water.

The dive
This is a drop onto rock rather than a swim out over reef. The boat sets up off Pulau Para, the descent is quick, and the working depth is the vertical face of the seamount between twenty-five and thirty metres. The current here turns and eddies against the wall instead of pushing steadily in one direction, and it is described as very strong — which is what makes this a site for experienced divers rather than simply a deep one.
The wall itself is the route — you run along it at depth with the rock on one shoulder and open blue on the other. That blue is where the fish are: barracuda and schooling jacks and trevally out off the face, and napoleon wrasse working the edge between the two. Twenty-five to thirty metres in moving water buys a short dive, so the profile is one pass and then up, with gas kept in hand for a drifting ascent.

Season follows Sangihe: Mar–Sep is the settled window for the crossing north from Manado; the north-west monsoon closes the chain from December to February.
