Edwards Island — Motunui — is one of the islets in the northern Tītī group where the Foveaux Strait cage boat anchors for great white sharks. This is cage work rather than a dive: the cage hangs at the surface and air comes from surface-supply regulators, though the operator still asks for a dive certificate or its own training session. The day is an early check-in at Bluff, a 55-minute crossing, and then a wait at anchor.
Also known as Motunui.

The dive
This is a surface dive. The Southern Isle works a five-man cage hung off the boat with air fed through surface-supply regulators, so there is no tank and no descent — but the operator still asks every diver to present a valid dive certificate or to take its own training session first. You climb in, hold on, and breathe from a hose while the vessel lies at anchor off the island. Everything else about the day is weather and patience.
It starts on the mainland. Check-in is at the Bluff booking office by 6:30 am for a 7:00 am departure, and the vessel then runs about 55 minutes across Foveaux Strait toward the Northern Tītī Islands, where the operator's spots are established — Edwards Island among them. Seals, penguins and dolphins are sometimes seen from the vessel on the way across.
What brings the sharks is the seals. Great whites take bony fish, sharks, rays, penguins and marine mammals, and in New Zealand a relatively large proportion of the diet is New Zealand fur seal — which is why this corner of the strait is counted alongside Guadalupe, the Farallon Islands and the Neptune Islands as a major coastal feeding aggregation. Whether one turns up during your turn in the cage is outside anyone's control.

Season follows Stewart Island: The cage season runs roughly Dec–Jun under permit; winter weather in the Foveaux Strait shuts the crossing entirely.
Know before you go
- Foveaux Strait is exposed: westerlies of up to 130 km/h blow through it and swells average over 3 m, occasionally over 10 m, so trips are cancelled or cut short on weather rather than on demand.
- Tidal streams in the strait run at 80 cm per second and up to 120 cm per second on spring tides, so conditions alongside the cage change through the day rather than staying as you found them.
- Wildlife-interaction charters here run under Department of Conservation permits — book an operator that holds current permissions rather than an ad-hoc boat.

Questions divers ask
Do you need a diving certificate to cage dive at Stewart Island?+
The operator requires divers to hold and present a valid dive certificate or to complete its own training session before getting in. The cage itself stays at the surface with air supplied from the boat, so there is no descent — what the day asks of you is getting in and out of the water in cold, moving conditions.
When does the Stewart Island shark cage season run?+
The operator's published season runs from 15 November to June. Foveaux Strait weather decides the rest: westerlies of up to 130 km/h and swells averaging over 3 m mean departures are cancelled more often than most visitors plan for.
