Tarragona

A day here works from the Port Esportiu, where several independent clubs keep premises on the marina and run short boat rides to the wreck-and-wall cluster off the harbour breakwater. Subkro sits 20 m from Platja del Miracle and dives from shore as well as by boat, SES Tarragona — founded in 1955 — manages the underwater park on the breakwater facing the port, and Mar de Hielo's booking calendar covers nine named sites from the same marina. Torredembarra, 11–15 km up the coast, has its own harbour-based operator, with the Biotopo Antina five minutes out by boat.

Much of the seabed is man-made and the better for it. The Dragonera, a sunken cargo ship at 18 m, anchors the SES underwater park alongside biotope structures with more than 250 catalogued species; conger eels, moray eels, octopus and schools of fish work the wreck, with nudibranchs and small crustaceans on the structure itself. Las Vigas is a field of 1960s public-works concrete forming corridors at 14 m, El Muro runs as a vertical wall from 10 to 26 m at the end of the breakwater, and the Heinkel He 111 bomber at 30 m holds lobster, rockfish and a resident conger named Sam. Off Torredembarra, El Brut is 4 km of rocky reef and Posidonia, dived, by operator lore, since Roman times.

The area suits divers who like wrecks at sensible depths: most named sites are Open Water level between 9 and 26 m, and Los Pinos off Torredembarra is a beach-accessible beginner site. The Heinkel needs Advanced certification, the El Buda fishing boat at 37 m a Deep specialty, and the El Cavour steamer at around 52 m is technical territory. Boat traffic near the working port asks for care on entry and exit. Divers after protected big-fish reserves should look to the Medes Islands instead; what Tarragona offers is history and structure a few minutes from the quay.
