Vava'u
A harbour wreck, a light-filled cave and humpback season

Vava'u is a Tongan island group with diving for all tastes, and most of its sites are minutes away by boat. The Clan McWilliam freighter lies upright in Neiafu Harbour, Swallows Cave fills with small fish under beams of light, and Pelagic Pinnacle can bring reef sharks, jacks and eagle rays. From July to October humpback whales breed in the same waters, met on snorkel swims rather than on scuba.
About diving in Vava'u
Boats reach most sites in Vava'u within minutes, and operators pick sites to suit the prevailing current, wave and wind conditions and the divers' experience. An island day can run to two dives around the inner island group, with the weather and wind direction deciding where. The Clan McWilliam wreck needs no island run: it lies 350 m from a dive-centre jetty in Koko Bay, part of the harbour, where it is completely protected.
Most sites are reef systems built on chimneys, pinnacles, caves, caverns, drop-offs and swim-throughs, covered in a mix of hard and soft corals. Reef fish of every size, sharks, nudibranchs and crustaceans live on them, and one house reef is a sloping wall running from 3 to 35 m. Vava'u is well known for its cave dives, from Swallows Cave to the tunnels and crevices of China Town.
Coral Garden is relaxed enough for newer divers and for anyone wanting a slower-paced dive, while the strong currents that bring the pelagics to Pelagic Pinnacle make it a challenging dive. The nearest recompression chamber is in Auckland or Fiji, so the standing advice is to dive within one's limits and knowledge, or with one of the experienced operators in the islands.

Questions divers ask
Which certification is needed for the Clan McWilliam wreck?+
The wreck is for experienced divers, or at least Advanced Divers accompanied by a guide. It takes two daytime dives to see properly, and it is also dived at night.
Do dive operators close during the year?+
Some operators in Vava'u close for the summer, from December to April, while all of them are open in winter, May to November. Summer is also the tourist low season, so it is worth confirming that a centre is running before booking a trip then.
What wetsuit is needed in Vava'u?+
A rashie or a 3 mm wetsuit is enough from December to April, when the water is around 28 °C. From May to November, at 25–27 °C, a rashie or 3 mm still works, but divers who feel the cold may prefer a 5 mm suit.
