Zakamica

Circle the islet; wall from 5 to 35 m with a cavern

Area photo: Borut Furlan · CC BY-SA 4.0

An island off Vis that can be circled on a single dive, with the wall on its north side running from 5 metres down to 35 and a cavern set into it at 30. Because the shallow side stays well inside easy limits, the site takes newer divers and experienced ones off the same boat.

The dive

The dive is a circuit of the island rather than an out-and-back, so it is run in whichever direction suits the day and finished where it started. The north side is where the terrain is: a wall dropping from 5 metres to 35, pale karst limestone in steps and slabs like most of the seabed around Vis, with shallow water on top of it for the end of the dive.

The cavern sits at 30 metres in that wall. Divers with the depth experience drop to it, look in, and come back up onto the shallow side to finish, while a group staying shallower can run the top of the wall the whole way round and still see the same rock. The site is described as suitable for beginners and advanced divers alike, and that split in the terrain is exactly why it can be both.

Know before you go

  • The cavern at 30 m is an overhead at a depth where no-decompression time is already short: look in with a light rather than pushing inside.

Questions divers ask

Is Zakamica suitable for beginners?+

Yes for the shallow part of the circuit, which starts at 5 metres. The wall runs to 35 metres and the cavern in it sits at 30, so the deeper half of the site needs experience beyond entry level.
