Al Hoceima is a town on Morocco's Mediterranean coast whose Isly beach sits inside the Al Hoceima National Park, created in 2004. Two centres work from the town's own beaches, Isly and Calabonita, with boat dives into the park and a shore site off Calabonita. Named sites such as Calabunita, Moro Viejo, Mahal and Topos run from 2 m to 41 m, and the water swings from about 15 °C in February to 23 °C in August.
About diving in Al Hoceima
Diving here is organised from the town's beaches. The Moroccan Diving Center sits on Isly beach and runs boat trips into the Al Hoceima National Park, with PADI-certified instructors. The ACRAP Diving Club, founded in 2010 by people from the town, is on the edge of Calabonita beach, where its own shore site lies between 2 m and 10 m. The Moroccan Diving Center runs its dives for certified divers from February to October, and both centres are in the town itself.
The park was created in 2004 and is managed by Morocco's Haut-Commissariat des eaux et forêts et de la lutte contre la désertification. The named sites span a wide depth range: Calabunita runs from 2 m to 41 m, Moro Viejo from 4 m to 40 m, and Topos from 16 m to 41 m, while Mahal stays between 12 m and 26 m. Three dolphin species live in these waters, the common dolphin, the common bottlenose dolphin and the striped dolphin. Water averages about 15 °C in February and 23 °C in August.
Al Hoceima suits divers who want a Mediterranean coast with a national-park setting and are happy with a small local scene of beach-based centres. New divers have the shallow Calabonita shore site, while the deeper named sites favour divers trained past 30 m. Calabunita, Moro Viejo and Topos all reach about 40 m, so the deep end of the park asks for deep training and planning.
