The Zenobia, a 172-meter Swedish ferry that capsized on her maiden voyage in 1980, lies on its side just 1.5 km off Larnaca and ranks among the top wreck dives in the world, its car decks and cargo of lorries spread from 18 to 42 meters. The surrounding waters are a marine protected area where dusky grouper, barracuda schools, and green sea turtles are common, and low current keeps the wreck accessible across a wide range of experience levels. Smaller Larnaca sites like Sheep Dip Cave and the shallow reef at Oroklini add cavern and turtle-watching dives between wreck trips.

About diving in Larnaca — Zenobia

Almost everything runs from Larnaca marina as short boat trips, and because the wreck lies so close inshore, a two-dive visit fills a morning rather than a full day on the water. The diving builds by repetition rather than variety: a first dive usually traces the upper hull and the shallower superstructure, a second drops along the car decks, and divers who stay a week work through the ship in sections instead of ticking off separate sites.

A ship lying on her side takes a dive or two to read. Decks become walls, corridors run vertically, and railings that should be handrails turn into ladders. The cargo is the other thing few divers are ready for, with lorries still chained in ranks on the car decks and some hanging where the list left them. Guided penetration is graded, from open swim-throughs with daylight at both ends to genuine overhead inside the accommodation block.

Conditions explain why the wreck is dived so widely. Current is usually mild, the surrounding water is protected, and because so much of the structure stands clear of the seabed, bottom times are workable rather than rushed. Groups split by depth off the same mooring, and in winter the trade-off flips: cooler water in a thicker suit buys the year's clearest views down the hull and moorings without queues.

It suits divers who came for wrecks specifically, and it is a natural base for wreck and technical training, with plenty of centres building courses around it. It is a thinner choice for anyone chasing reef scenery, though the protected water keeps grouper on the structure and turtles on the shallows nearby, and the smaller cavern and reef dives along the coast are enough to vary a week built around the ship.

Diveable year-round: Jun–Oct is warmest with water above 23°C; Dec–Feb runs 16–18°C with the clearest water and the quietest moorings.

Best months: June, July, August, September, October

Larnaca water temperature and weather by month

The sea surface runs from 17 °C (63 °F) in February to 28 °C (82 °F) in August. It is 24 °C (75 °F) or warmer from June to October. Most rain falls from November to March, peaking at about 80 mm (3.1 in) in December; it stays largely dry from April to September. Daytime highs reach 36 °C (97 °F) in August and drop to 19 °C (66 °F) in January. The coldest water here is about 17 °C (63 °F), so pack a 7 mm suit with a hood, or a semi-dry.

Dive types & marine life

Grouper hold station in the wreck's recesses year-round, and barracuda school over the hull in summer; green turtles are most reliable on the shallow reefs from June to October. Nudibranchs show on the encrusted plating in spring, and winter's clear, quiet water is the best time to take in the whole silhouette of the ship.
