Roughly 161 km (100 miles) off the Texas and Louisiana coasts, Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary protects coral reef caps growing over ancient salt domes, with coral cover and health that rivals much of the Caribbean despite the Gulf of Mexico setting. Manta rays and scalloped hammerheads patrol the reef edges, and the banks are known for a mass coral spawning event a few nights after the August full moon. Access is by overnight boat only, roughly ten hours each way from Freeport or Galveston.
About diving in Flower Garden Banks
Everything here happens from a boat that does not come back for a couple of days. Charters load in the evening, run through the night and are on the moorings by breakfast, and from then on the day is a run of dives off the back deck with meals and naps in between. Anchoring is not allowed inside the sanctuary, so boats tie to fixed buoys, which means the last dive of the day can be a night dive on the same patch of reef, straight down the line from the swim platform.
Each bank rises out of deep water as an isolated high point with nothing shallow anywhere near it. Descents run down a mooring line through blue water until the cap resolves underneath: massive boulder and brain corals packed edge to edge, cut by pale sand channels. Below the coral the cap gives way to rubble and coralline algal nodules before the slope drops into the Gulf. Nothing on the caps is shallow, so no-decompression limits rather than air usually end the dive.
The banks do not dive alike, and a trip is shaped around that. The two Flower Garden caps carry the coral and get dived on repeat over a couple of days, while Stetson Bank sits closer to shore and tends to be fitted in at the start or end of a run, making it the first thing dropped when the forecast tightens. Spawning charters are their own category: booked far in advance, worked as a sequence of night dives, and judged on an hour or two of one or two nights.
This suits divers comfortable being a long way from anything. If the weather turns there is no fallback, no easy beach dive and no sheltered site inshore, and the crossing is long enough that seasickness is worth taking seriously in advance. What you get back is repeat diving on the same water with almost no other boats on it. Anyone who wants varied terrain, shallow undemanding profiles or a town to walk around in the evening is better served elsewhere on the Gulf coast.

Charter season runs roughly April-October when Gulf seas are calmer; coral spawn a few nights after the August full moon, and winter cold fronts shut most operators down.
Best months: June, July, August, September

Dive types & marine life
Mantas are the dependable big animal, working the caps through the charter season, and whale sharks are a summer possibility more often met at the surface between dives than below. Turtles, barracuda, eagle rays and grouper hold on the caps all season. Hammerheads are a slope animal and a matter of luck, talked about most at the cool ends of the season rather than something to plan around.

How to get to Flower Garden Banks
Trips leave from Freeport or Galveston, both an easy drive from Houston's airports, and most divers take a room in port before an evening departure. Charters run two- and three-day schedules, sell out early for the August spawn dates, and cancel outright when a front comes through rather than substituting a nearer site.
