Oceanic and reef mantas share one cleaning station

A submerged seamount about 20 minutes by boat from Misool Resort, rising from depths exceeding 60 m to within a few metres of the surface. It works as a busy cleaning station where both oceanic and reef mantas turn up, with grey reef and whitetip sharks — and occasionally hammerheads — cruising the deeper edges. Current runs strong, better than 2 knots at times.

The dive
The pinnacle tops out shallow — the resort puts the reef top at about 7 m, and another account has it reaching within 3 m of the surface — so the dive begins almost as soon as you leave the boat. You work down the flanks of the seamount, which rises from depths exceeding 60 m, though dives are planned far shallower, with a listed maximum of 40 m. The draw is the cleaning station: this is a busy manta station, and you have a very good chance of meeting both species here, the giant oceanic birostris and the smaller reef manta alfredi.
The deeper edges carry the shark traffic — grey reef and whitetip reef sharks, with hammerheads cruising past occasionally — and the site also serves as a nursery for whitetip reef sharks. Current is the organising fact of the dive: it is rated strong, better than 2 knots, so follow the guide's line and treat this as a dive for divers already comfortable moving with water. The ride back to the resort is about 20 minutes.
