Manta Sandy
Reef mantas queue over the sand in 8-15 m of water
Area photo: Buena Ventura · CC BY 3.0
Manta Sandy is a shallow manta cleaning station on a broad sandy seabed at 8-15 m in the Dampier Strait, beside Manta Ridge. Low hard-coral outcrops around the sand hold the cleaner fish that bring reef mantas in, adults and juveniles alike. Nearly non-existent currents and 20-28 m visibility make it one of the few manta sites that suits Open Water divers and snorkellers.

The dive
The dive is a short one in every dimension: a broad sandy seabed at 8 to 15 m, ringed by low hard-coral outcrops, with the cleaning station itself out on the sand. Currents are nearly non-existent, visibility runs 20 to 28 m and the water holds steady at 27 to 30 degrees, which is why this is a manta site that Open Water divers and snorkellers can dive rather than an advanced one.
What you are there for is the queue. Peak manta activity runs from May to October, when cool, nutrient-rich upwellings draw the rays in, and they often stack vertically above the cleaning station while they wait their turn - which is what makes close observation possible. Reef mantas of all ages use the site, juveniles included, and the sand is shallow enough that the small cleaner fish doing the work are easy to watch too.
Night dives here are worth the trouble as well. Mantas linger after sunset and share the shallow sand with moray eels and octopuses, with bioluminescent plankton in the water. Reef manta sightings at the station are reliable year-round, so the May-to-October peak sharpens the odds rather than defining the season.

Questions divers ask
When are mantas most reliable at Manta Sandy?+
Peak manta activity runs from May to October, when cool nutrient-rich upwellings draw the rays in to queue for cleaning, often stacking vertically above the station. Reef manta sightings here are reliable year-round, so the peak sharpens the odds rather than defining the season.
Can beginners dive Manta Sandy?+
Yes. The sandy seabed sits at 8 to 15 m, currents are nearly non-existent and visibility is 20 to 28 m, so the site suits Open Water divers, and snorkellers can watch the station from the surface.
