Adult male and female whale sharks gather together, seen nowhere else

St Helena is one of the most isolated inhabited islands on earth, 1,900 km from the nearest continent, and its water holds a whale shark aggregation found nowhere else: adult males and females of similar size gathering together between December and March, behaviour researchers think may be linked to mating. Encounters are snorkel-only under island rules. The diving itself is volcanic rock, endemic reef fish, and the wreck of the tanker RFA Darkdale, torpedoed in James Bay in 1941.

About diving in St Helena

Diving here is a small, personal operation. A couple of outfits work out of Jamestown, boats are small and groups smaller, and the run to most sites along the sheltered leeward coast takes minutes rather than hours. Days are built around the swell: the long rollers that periodically make the wharf landing awkward decide more than any timetable does. You will usually have a site to yourself, and dives get slotted around a morning of walking or of the island's history.

There is no coral framework to speak of. The island is basalt dropping straight into deep water, so sites are boulder slopes, undercut ledges, arches and short caverns, with encrusting sponge and algae in place of hard coral. Clarity swings with plankton and swell rather than with the calendar, and a thin wetsuit covers most of the year. Current is usually light, so the demanding part is rarely the dive itself — it is getting on and off a small boat in open ocean.

The fish are the surprise. Long isolation has left a shore-fish community with an unusually high share of species found nowhere else, and a guide can point out most of them in a dive or two; the species count is low, but numbers on the shallow ledges are not. The anchorage adds wreck diving shallow enough to repeat two or three times in a week, and the place rewards a slow, curious style rather than a hunt for the next big animal.

This suits divers who treat the destination as the trip rather than the diving as the trip. Getting here costs time and money, and the reward is emptiness: no second boat on the site, no queue at the wharf, and a small community that notices you came for the water. Anyone after warm tropical reef, coral colour or a reliable big-animal encounter outside the December-to-March window will find it thin.

Whale sharks aggregate Dec–Mar and are snorkel-only; reef and wreck diving runs year-round in 20–26°C water.

Best months: January, February, March, December

St Helena water temperature and weather by month

The sea surface runs from 20 °C (68 °F) in September to 25 °C (77 °F) in March. It is 24 °C (75 °F) or warmer from January to May. Rain is scarce: about 50 mm (2 in) falls in a typical year. Daytime highs reach 26 °C (79 °F) in March and drop to 20 °C (68 °F) in September. The coldest water here is about 20 °C (68 °F), so pack a 5 mm suit.

Dive types & marine life

Whale sharks are the December-to-March event, and devil rays turn up in the same water. Dolphins are seen regularly along the leeward coast, humpbacks pass through the middle months of the year, and turtles and tuna show over the ledges, alongside the endemic reef fish that are there in every month.

How to get to St Helena

There is one scheduled way in: a weekly flight from Johannesburg to St Helena Airport, with a cargo ship covering most freight. Jamestown is the only town and the practical base, and diving runs from the seafront on small day boats, since the coast is mostly cliff. Book the flight before anything else and let it set the shape of the trip.
