Zeeland — Oosterschelde & Grevelingen
Cuttlefish arrive by the hundred each spring to court in the shallows
Zeeland is where a large share of northern Europe learns to dive: two adjacent bodies of salt water behind the Delta Works, both entirely shore-accessible, both signposted with car parks and entry steps. The Oosterschelde is tidal and must be dived on the slack, but it is the richer of the two — in spring, common cuttlefish arrive in numbers to court and lay eggs in the shallows. The Grevelingen has no tide at all, which makes it the more forgiving option.
About diving in Zeeland — Oosterschelde & Grevelingen
A day here runs on a tide table and a car boot. Divers pick a signposted entry along the dikes, park a few metres from the water and walk in down steps or a concrete ramp. On the Oosterschelde the plan is built backwards from slack, since the storm-surge barrier cut the tidal range without removing it: groups arrive early, kit up in the car park and go in on a fixed minute. Miss it and there is little point getting wet. The Grevelingen sets no such clock, which is why courses and second dives end up there.
There is no natural reef in either body of water. The structure is human: bridge piers, basalt dike revetment, oyster beds, sunken barges and lock walls give the vertical surface, and the rest is silt, shell and eelgrass. Trim and finning technique decide the dive, because one careless team turns a shallow site into a brownout for everyone behind them. Still water lets the Grevelingen settle and hold heavier growth on the blocks, though its deeper basins, dammed off from the sea since the early 1970s, can run low on oxygen by late summer.
Spring changes the character of the place. The cuttlefish move in from the North Sea to breed, fix their egg clusters to whatever structure is available and die once they have spawned, and for those weeks the well-known entries have full car parks and queues on the steps at weekends. Outside that window the appeal is quieter and smaller in scale, which is the version most regulars actually dive: anemones, sponge, gobies and pipefish along a wall of blocks, worked slowly with a torch.
This is diving built for repetition rather than spectacle. No boat, no charter fee, tanks in the car, three dives in a day if you want them, and a night dive available from any entry because you never leave the shore. It is also a real skills venue: timing, navigation in poor visibility and honest gas planning all matter on the tidal side, and that is what keeps club divers coming back long after they qualify. Anyone hoping for scenery or blue water will be disappointed.

2011–2025 averages. Sea surface: NOAA Coral Reef Watch, measured at the surface, so deeper water can run colder. Daytime high and rain: NASA POWER.
Cuttlefish season runs Apr–Jun and is the year's highlight; winter is coldest at 4°C but gives the clearest water.
Zeeland water temperature and weather by month
The sea surface runs from 5 °C (41 °F) in February to 20 °C (68 °F) in August. Rain falls through the year, about 70 mm (2.8 in) a month on average, with December the wettest. Daytime highs reach 29 °C (84 °F) in July and drop to 11 °C (52 °F) in January. The coldest water here is about 4 °C (39 °F), so pack a drysuit.
Dive types & marine life
Cuttlefish are the April-to-June event, courting and laying in water shallow enough to spend a whole dive on. The rest of the year is small stuff: nudibranchs, gobies, pipefish, anemones and sponge on the blocks, lobster and crab beneath them, and the occasional squid after dark. Summer puts shoals of small fish over the structure, and the cold months give the sharpest macro detail.

How to get to Zeeland — Oosterschelde & Grevelingen
Almost everyone drives, and a car is essential because the entries are strung out along the dikes. Rotterdam is the closest airport, with Amsterdam Schiphol, Antwerp and Brussels the other arrival options. Zierikzee, Renesse and Scharendijke sit between the two bodies of water, and Wemeldinge is the base on the southern Oosterschelde shore. Every dive is from shore.
