Hurghada & El Gouna
Daily boats to the Abu Nuhas wrecks and the fish-packed Aquarium reef

Hurghada's coral reefs lie several miles offshore, so the diving is a day on a boat. Daily trips run out to the Giftun Islands, to Gota Abu Ramada, nicknamed the Aquarium for its fish, and to the wrecks of Abu Nuhas, among them the Giannis D. Nearer the marina, the El Mina minesweeper gives a deeper wreck dive, and a pod of spinner dolphins rests in the lagoon of Shaab El Erg, between Hurghada and El Gouna. Easy reefs make the coast especially appealing to divers with little experience of scuba.
About diving in Hurghada & El Gouna
Diving here means a boat ride: the coral reefs lie several miles offshore, so divers and snorkellers take a boat out to them. Boats leave daily for the Giftun Islands, the Abu Nuhas wrecks and the northern reefs, though the journey from Hurghada to Abu Nuhas is long. Gota Abu Ramada sits a short ride south of Giftun, and El Mina is less than 25 minutes from the marina. Careless Reef and Umm Gamar carry strong currents and suit drift dives and experienced divers.
Underwater the coast mixes offshore reefs and small isolated ergs with the cargo wrecks of Abu Nuhas. Erg Sabina, a small reef in the middle of the Giftun Strait, holds turtles, big puffers, goatfish schools, Arabian and emperor angelfish, nudibranchs and lobster among a crowd of small reef fish. At Fanous East, a narrow strip of reef around a lagoon north-west of Giftun Kebir, turtles, bluespotted rays, eagle rays, jacks and barracuda reside.
The coast suits divers with little experience of scuba, who come to see the reefs and the marine life, and Abu Nuhas, where four ships lie next to each other within recreational limits, draws divers who enjoy wrecks. The reefs here lie miles out, whereas in the Sinai resorts and in Jordan they hug the coast, so a diver set on reaching the reef from the beach chooses those coasts instead.

2011–2025 averages. Sea surface: NOAA Coral Reef Watch, measured at the surface, so deeper water can run colder. Daytime high and rain: NASA POWER.
December to February sit outside the calmer stretch of the year, and the water reaches its coolest in February. From March the seas settle, a window that lasts until November. June to August bring the calmest seas of the year, and the water peaks in July. September to November keep the calmer seas before winter returns. The boats run through every month, so the calendar decides comfort rather than whether diving happens.
Best months: June, July, August
Hurghada & El Gouna water temperature and weather by month
The sea surface runs from 22 °C (72 °F) in March to 29 °C (84 °F) in August. It is 24 °C (75 °F) or warmer from May to December. Rain is almost unknown: under 10 mm (0.4 in) falls in a typical year. Daytime highs reach 40 °C (104 °F) in July and drop to 27 °C (81 °F) in January. The coldest water here is about 21 °C (70 °F), so pack a 5 mm suit.
Dive types & marine life
The headline animals are residents rather than visitors: the spinner dolphin pod rests in the Shaab El Erg lagoon during the day, though sightings are never guaranteed, and napoleon wrasse live on Gota Abu Ramada. Turtles, eagle rays and barracuda reside at Fanous East, and hammerheads at Careless Reef are an early-morning chance.

Questions divers ask
What certification does the El Mina wreck need?+
Advanced Open Water. She lies on her port side at 32 m, and going inside the wreck needs penetration training.
Is there shore diving in Hurghada?+
Not onto the main reefs. The coral lies several miles offshore, so divers and snorkellers take a boat out to it.
Is Hurghada a good place for new divers?+
Yes. Giftun, Abu Ramada and Shaab El Erg have calm conditions and are used for courses, and many centres offer introductory dives to people without a certification.
