The Togians sit in the Gulf of Tomini, in the crook of Sulawesi's arms, and are one of very few places on earth with all three reef types — fringing, barrier and atoll — in one archipelago. Getting there takes days. What waits is a B-24 Liberator bomber sitting almost intact in 22 m, a landlocked lake at Mariona full of stingless jellyfish that pulse around swimmers, and the volcanic island of Una Una with walls that fall into deep, clear water.
About diving in Togian Islands
Nothing about diving here moves fast. The dive bases are small operations attached to bungalow resorts on Kadidiri and neighbouring islands, and the boats are wooden and unhurried. A typical day is two dives with a long crossing built into at least one of them, plus a house reef you can walk into whenever you like. Power often runs on a generator for part of the day, rental kit can be thin enough that bringing your own regulator and computer is the safer plan, and schedules shift with weather and boat availability.
The three reef types are not a technicality; they produce genuinely different dives. Fringing reef off the bungalows gives easy shallow coral and most of the macro. The barrier and atoll reefs further out are long, gentle swims in shallow water, with the fish rather than the terrain doing the work. The walls, Una Una's above all, are the only dives with real depth under them, falling into clear water with schooling fish holding on the corners — and reaching them is a crossing measured in hours, not a hop.
The two things people travel here for sit at opposite ends of the effort scale. The bomber is an undemanding dive in itself: open sand, no overhead, and enough of the airframe holding its shape to swim the length of it and read an aircraft rather than debris. Identification of individual wartime losses in this part of Sulawesi is not settled, though, so the history attached to it is worth holding loosely. The marine lake is not a dive at all — a boat, a short walk through forest, then a snorkel — and it fills a morning rather than a tank.
This suits divers who are travelling anyway and want the islands as much as the diving: people crossing Sulawesi overland, or anyone content to spend days getting somewhere. It does not suit a short holiday, because the journey eats time at both ends and most visitors find a week on the islands is about the least that makes sense. Carry enough cash for the whole stay, as banking is scarce and unreliable once you leave the mainland, and expect phone signal to come and go by island.

2011–2025 averages. Sea surface: NOAA Coral Reef Watch, measured at the surface, so deeper water can run colder. Daytime high and rain: NASA POWER.
Mar–Sep is driest and calmest; the wet season from November to February brings rain and rougher inter-island crossings.
Best months: April, May, June, July, August
Togian Islands water temperature and weather by month
The sea surface stays around 30 °C (86 °F) all year. Rain falls through the year, about 140 mm (5.5 in) a month on average, with June the wettest. Daytime highs sit around 31 °C (88 °F) all year. The coldest water here is about 28 °C (82 °F), so pack a 3 mm, or even a 2 mm, suit.
Dive types & marine life
Hard coral and reef-fish shoals are the everyday sight, with turtles, napoleon wrasse and the odd reef shark on the walls, and nudibranchs and small critters on the fringing reef. The lake's stingless jellyfish are snorkelled rather than dived and have no season, though numbers rise and fall. April to August is the calmest, clearest stretch; November to February brings rain and murkier crossings.

How to get to Togian Islands
Getting in is the hard part. Most people come through Ampana on the Sulawesi mainland or on the overnight ferry from Gorontalo, then take a public boat to Wakai and a resort transfer on to Kadidiri or the outer islands. Sailings are infrequent and timetables change, so build spare days at both ends. Diving is day boat, plus a house reef you can enter from shore.
